Reflection

Deriving higher-order beliefs from beliefs already held — the one stage that manufactures memories rather than receiving them.

Why it matters in a memory layer

A summary is a read-time convenience thrown away after it is shown. A derived belief is written back: ranked, retrieved, and stated as though the user had said it, with no document behind it to check. So the interesting work is refusal, not generation.

Similarity is the obvious generator and the wrong one. On this course's corpus it produces 20 candidate pairs whose highest-scoring is a contradiction the system already arbitrated, and 14 of 20 pair facts from unrelated slots. Grouping by slot instead gives four candidate groups — and one of them is about the user's partner, because a slot keys what is claimed, not who it is claimed about. Composing it writes that the user works night shifts as a charge nurse.
